What a difference a year makes...

I'd be hard pressed to come up with any memorable positive ones, so here's a few of the negative ones I've heard this year:

"If you weren't such a jerk..."

"You sure like to toot your own horn."

"You're such a Sierra Snob" (Which is going to become my new handle.)

And my favorite, "You're a womanizer." (The last two make me laugh. The first, because it's so true and the second 'cause it's so far from the truth.)

I hope someone can turn this back into a positive thread. And I promise I'll try hard in '08 to be a better human being.

The greatest use for a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.

“I think I have learned other and more important things, as well. One is that you cannot be a good mountaineer, however great your ability, unless you are cheerful and have the spirit of comradeship. Friends are as important as achievement. Another is that teamwork is the one key to success, and that selfishness only makes a man small. Still another is that no man, on a mountain or elsewhere, gets more out of anything than he puts into it… Be great. Make others great. That is what I have learned…”

~Tenzing Norgay
Excerpt from Tiger of the Snows

Tenzing Norgay is one of the first two men to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. He and Sir Edmund Hillary reached the top on May 29, 1953. Neither would ever admit to the world who was actually the first to make that final step. They did it together.

"I think I was abducted by aliens near the bottom of the mountain, had my memory erased, and was then dropped off on the summit"

Rafael Mendiola

That's what I told my wife after a strong day and fast (for me anyways) climb up Tehachapi Mountain. I've been significantly stronger ever since. Don't know why but I'm not complaining, specially after feeling real weak and slow all Summer.

In some ways, going to the mountains is incomprehensible to many people and inexplicable by those who go. The reasons are difficult to unearth and only with those who are similarly drawn is there no need to try to explain.

Joe Tasker, Savage Arena in Boardman Tasker Omnibus page 260.

an introspective quote for all of us mountain lovers here.

When we were at the portal getting ready to start backpacking up the Mountaineers route. My twins were 9 at the time and Tiffany was 11. Some guy was just returning from the trail. He looked kind of beat and couldn't help but make this comment. .....

"They are never going to make it!"

I used that comment to motivate the younger children all the way to the top.

That was how our family trip up the MR Started.

I heard a lot out there this year, and I included some of my faves on the intro to my Xmas letter/slideshow. But here are a few more that I found in some of my readings:

"I do it because I love the beauty and simplicity of a way of living which brings confidence, which confirms resolution and calls for courage." -- Colette Richard

"One needs to try one's strength and one's willpower, to triumph over one's destiny, to remake oneself, to put one's muscles to use." -- Colette Richard

"Climbing leads me into myself, through my hidden doors, into corners and attics." -- Janet Roddan

"On this climb, my body will feel pain and will suffer injuries but will recover and forget. My soul, however, will experience a deep peace and exhilaration from which it will never recover. That is why I climb." -- Ann E. Kruse

"Climbers do not really conquer mountains; climbers conquer themselves." -- Ann E. Kruse

We all do what we do for our own reasons, which is why being out there and part of this "family" is so very special. We make our own adventures, whether it's commuting to work and dreaming of the mountains, or being able to explore into their depths on a regular basis. For anyone, from the "Sierra Snobs" to the flatlanders, these sports offer challenge, possible adversity, success, satisfaction, and peace. I wish all of you all of that in the coming year and beyond.

And, yes, Richard, that goes for you, too. grin

"You might want to try turning it on with this button" smirk
(what I said to a group who couldn't get their GPS unit to work)

. . . and related to the above . . .

"This sure is a small GPS; how do you open this thing and turn it on?" crazy
What a hiker said while looking at my old mirrored orienteering sighting compass (one with a closable top).

But my favorite for the year:

"An overnight trip is just a dayhike gone bad" grin
(Been there, done that!). It was written by someone on one of these outdoor-related BB's. I can't remember who it was to give them proper credit.

"If you're not falling, you're not climbing."

"I know, DYNO!"

"I've got 99 problems, but this pitch ain't one."

"It's a failing debate, you can't wait to get off this, welcome to off width."

"Even my forehead is scraped up."

"My wish list is big cams and Big Bros, but all big gear does is feed big egos."

"Stone to stone it doesn't matter who's badder, crash-padders, bolt clippers, crack rippers, we're no different."

"I found you, I want that booty, why can't you just give it up to me?"

"If you climbed as much time as you spend talking, you'd be harder, better, faster, stronger."

"How hard do you want it, saying 'take' at the crux again?"

"That didn't last."

- Doug Sr.'s comment during a converstaion about rock climbing, up at the Portal Store, when I mentioned that at one time (mid 70's) I was better than Lynn Hill.

"You want me to show it to you?"

- Snow Bunny (politically incorrect?) on the gondola at Mammoth yesterday afternoon during a conversation about snowboarding. When I said yes, she promptly got up and started to remove her pants... (How do I get so lucky?) ... and showed me her "tush cush" (tailbone protector). I stuttered "it looks like a pair of cycling shorts."

Merry Christmas.
