Winter hikes are difficult. We watched an ever changing forecast for 10 days and finally ended up in Yosemite.....to much uncertainty with the Whitney Portal road (mostly not wanting to get our car snowed in)

So at the last minute we opted to drive into Yosemite just before the storm hit Wednesday night. That gave us the opportunity to spend 4 hours Thursday morning in the storm hiking up to Vernal Falls...a solid 12 inches of new snow at the top of the falls.

Snowing but no wind...a nice day a hike in the snow....peaceful and quiet...and not a soul in sight.

Kent,

Great photos! One of these days I've got to get up to Yosemite during the winter. Never been there during that time of the year but it looks absolutely enchanting and magical! wink What fun! I don't know what it is with boys losing their shirts in a snowstorm. Mine were no different. Just great to be with your boys on a real fun adventure!

Kent: Great trip and pics! I so miss seeing the Valley in snow. My fam used to cruise up there the weekend before Christmas every year (haven't ever been to the Bracebridge Dinner, though!), and I love seeing the snow in there. Funny how hard I had to work to climb OUT of the valley this past October to get to the snow!

I've sent the link to your pics to my parents, who I know will love them, too. I especially loved the flashback photos: your brood taking over the tree on Sentinal Dome was a hoot!

Merry Christmas!

Certainly hiking in the snow adds a sense of adventure. It must have been nice to be at Vernal Falls without the big crowds of the summer.
