Fred.......
As you know, ReserveAmerica is implementing a new reservation system. With the new system comes changes, i.e., reservations can only be made 6 months or 180 days in advance instead of the usual 8 months or 280 days. There are others.
This change becomes effective on October 17 (actually the system upgrade will occur between September 30 ending October 17th. So after October 17th the earliest you can make reservations for the Portal for Memorial Weekend is sometime late November. But…….
If you call before the system goes down, the 8 month rule still applies. Only 5 days left!!!!
You have to call. The website has already restricted reservations to 6 months, or 180 days. having said this, the customer service representative was surprised that the online system has been changed already.
By calling, I have reserved 2 campsites at the Portal for Memorial Weekend.

Paul, Thanks for the heads up. I knew about plan for the window change, but I did not know that they already implemented it on their web site. I guess they figure that at the end of the year people are not as concerned about advanced planning as at the beginning of the year.

I've been going up every year for Memorial Weekend, so it's etched in my brain that on, or about September 25, I'd better call in. The campgrounds fill up quickly and I'am somewhat compulsive about not missing out.
Fred... you do a great job on this board. Thanks

It appears as if Recreation.gov is back up, but none of the family sites at Whitney Portal are within the 2008 reservation window yet. As stated earlier, the window is now 6 months in advance.

Also, it looks as if they updated the map of Whitney Portal campground to include only the reservable campsites. There is a note at the bottom of the description that says campsites have to be reserved at least 5 days in advance. The new link is Whitney Portal.

Fred.......
I was able to make reservations for the Whitney Portal family campground for Memorial weekend (May 23 - 26 - Fri, Sat and Sun).
So it's up and going.

Paul, Thanks for the update. Since the campground cannot be reserved before May 11, I had no way of verifying the 6 month window until November 11. I see that we are now in the reservation window. Have fun.
