Anyone have any input as to what to do or not to do?
We will be at the portal tomorrow noon and I am interested in any input.
I usually fly fish but will change methods to suit.
I am not a MEAT fisherman but will keep 1-2 legal fish for hors d'oeuvre.
Also any local restrictions to note....?

the portal is nothing more than a little pond.
if you want a day before to fish and acclimate drive to HS Meadows, Mammoth, or some of the Bishop area lakes - have a casual day fishing and then put away the pole and hike Whitney the next day

Yep, the pond is small, but it is loaded with stocked trout. You, with your fly skills, might be able to outsmart some of those critters, if you are so inclined, just for the fun of it. A lot of kids during the summer fish at the pond, and it would be nice to see someone actually catch something.

I don't know that anyone has reported in this forum about fishing Lone Pine Creek between the Portal and Lone Pine Lake. It would be interesting if you could give it a try with your flies and let us know if you catch anything.

I use a spinning outfit with flies on lakes above, starting with Lone Pine Lake and have enjoyed fresh, delectable pan-sized trout. With your fly fishing, I think you could catch the bigger, elusive ones.

Let us know if you catch anything! Catch and release is fun, but I do like fresh, out-of-the-lake trout dinners. You come from a great trout area. My biggest catch was a few-pound trout out of Lake Edison up the canyon from Shaver Lake, and I've seen huge ones in that little pond Tom talks about, but they are too smart or too well-fed for me.

I always see fish being pulled out of the pond. Ive never fished it because it is so small and stocked so heavily. Lone Pine Creek offers some fun fishing. Bigger fish in there. Just dont fish the big pools where they hang out. It seems they are feeding when they fall back into the flowing water. Find smaller pools in flowing areas. Good Luck!

What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. Thats why i climb!
