I wanted to do Whitney this coming weekend but I need to change from the MR to the Main Trail. Any ideas as to how to get a permit? I checked and there are 0 available for the 25 or 26th. I just need a day pass for 3ppl.

Much appreciated.

Best advice is to call the reservation number. It's not that far out of line to run into cancellations that do not (and often times will not) show up on the reservation site. Besides, what's the worst they can tell you, no, no slots open? That's how I got in on 2 of my Whitney hikes last year

Hi Canuck--

Sorry that I cannot help you with your issue, but on a related note, I was wondering if (since you are looking to switch from the MR to the Main trail) you might have some MR permits (2) that you were looking to sell for this weekend? (preferably saturday)?

Thanks and good luck!

Sell? Sorry, I guess its been a while since I read up on the policies. I was under the impression that the MR route only required permits if you did an overnight trip. I avoided the permits for the main trail by doing the dayhike of the MR. Things must have changed. So, sorry, but I don't have any for sale.
Good luck

Permits are not transferable. You are correct that only overnight permits have an entry quota. Day hike permits are now required for North Fork/MR but they do not have a quota (and thus are not reservable).

As noted in the thread Unused Whitney Permits, you should have a good chance of getting a cancellation.
