The count down begins....... It is one month away from the day hike to Thor Peak. Are you ready?

Everyone is invited!!!! At last count, we had between 10 and 15 members who have shown interest.

Just a reminder that the hike will start at the Mt Whitney Main Trail at 8am...... Bob R will take us up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, past the E ledges (this will be fun to learn the route from Bob R), up the Smiley Face route to the top.

Bob estimates that we should be back at the Portal by 5pm. After that, it's beer and pizza at the Pizza Factory.

I’ll try and keep this post near the top so that everyone can view it.

Thanks for the reminder and count me in!
I have been hoping for an opportunity to follow Bob R. up the right side of the creek and it looks like I might get it cool

Oh! I will be hiking the main trail that day, bringing along a group of 5 or 6 women, so I will miss this Thor Pk hike. I would also like a chance to hike with Bob R and his crew some day, so if you do an open invitation again I'll try to be there!

As of today, I plan on being there and look forward to meeting many of the "regular" posters on this board.
I also have never taken the North Fork and am anxious to check out/learn that route.

I'm in (well, 90% certain).

Is someone going to pull a permit for the group, or should we each get our own on Friday?

I am hoping that after the hike, a little R&R at the Pizza Factory. Everyone is invited whether they hike with the group or not. More the merrier.

As for the decent, Bob R suggested the E Ledges as a way to cement everyone’s knowledge of the route. But, having said that, I don't see any reason why the group can't split up and those who want more time on the E Ledges take that route and those interested in the SE Colour descend there. Any thoughts on this?

As of right now, I plan on driving from Oakland to the Portal on Wednesday, so I can pick up a few permits. Not sure how many though. I'll be taking a day hike on both Thursday and Friday as warm-up.

Just a reminder that everyone needs to be self-sufficient.

I'm going to do my best to try to join y'all for this one. The opportunity to hike with some of the people I admire most is too good to pass up! See you there, L.

Hi Gang,
Is Thor Peak near the Whitney Trailhead? Is this the Mountaineers Route? I am considering joining the group and getting to know my fellow hikers.
Will I need a helmet or rope? Mileage out and back? I may want to hike the main trail (to the summit) the next day.
Please let me know the details.

Air here is too thick...must correct this problem ASAP. Looks like I'm coming out to play . Driving up Friday night...don't know if I'll acclimate, but will aim for Thor on Sat and Whitney on Sun.

Hi Maureen.....

There are a couple different routes up Thor. We will be taking the route that starts at the MMWT (next to the Portal Store). From there we stay on that trail until the cutoff at the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. From there we will ascend the drainage via the E Ledges.

Class 2... no helmets or ropes needed. Should be around an eight hour hike.... Beer and Pizza afterward.

Here are a couple links:

Original group hike posting (here you can read how we arrived at the decision to climb Thor): http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/37501/page/0/fpart/1

Here are a couple postings (pictures) from Bob R and Tomcat on their respective climbs of Thor to give you a better idea of what the terrain looks like.

Im gonna try to make this. I went up the MR for the first time 2 weeks ago and am looking forward to more ascents in the NF area. I'd have to drive home afterwards because I work on Sunday, but it's I've penciled in the date!

observant people may spot a "signal mirror" flash from a nearby peak in the afternoon - maybe someone can even catch it on camera. see y'all for pizza and beer at the factory.

I'm glad this popped back up. I remember reading this when you originally proposed it and it sounded like a great idea. It sounds like Bob R can make that date - along with a few other (very active) members to show us the route up Thor..? I'd really enjoy meeting some of the people I almost feel like I know from reading on this board for the last year. We are going up the MR this Saturday and if my prior commitment falls through on the 15th and I can find someone to ride with me (from the Visalia area) I'd love to join you all. Anybody from the valley going? - Rideshare??

If I end up not making it have a great trip....

Speaking of ridesharing... Anyone heading north for this out of the O.C./L.A./Inland Empire via the 15 ?

I'm considering joining in but the Jeep isn't being real reliable right at the moment. I'm in Fullerton. Since you'd be providing the vehicle, I'd pay for the gas.

Have a work function Friday afternoon, but considering if want to blow that off and head up and spend the night, or simply leave this area at around 2:00am Saturday morning or something.

So, basically open to discuss. Probably best if you send me a private message via this board's p/m function.

Thanks!

p.s. From the looks of things, looks like it's going to be a big group!

Paul - you mentioned picking up some permits. Will you be doing a tally of "RSVPers" and getting permits for those, or should we get our own? Im really looking forward to the hike and meeting folks.
