I have only day-hiked in the Whitney area of late and will be spending two nights at the Portal campgrounds shortly. Is it safe to leave gear, specifically tents, up, vacant, and unattended during the day (from the perspective of both bear and human interest)? We plan on day hikes for the better portion of two days that we will be staying at the campground. Thanks for feedback

WE spent 3 nights there last week, left our gear up and stashed all food items and valubles, had no problems with it.On our Whitney hike we left at 1:00am when we got back 17 hrs later the people that were camped next to us had left and brought left over firewood to our camp.I would put any food or scented items in bear box whenever you leave.

In general I would say safe, but there have been reports of theft around the Portal and even up at Trail Camp. The real issue if worrying about your stuff the whole time you are gone.
