No to belabor the point..but I've found the nicest features of the SteriPen is that it just plain doesn't take any effort to get your water. Stick it in, stir it around, and your done. My Katadyn Pocket filter (which I still do love) does require a fair bit of vigorous pumping to get each liter out of it...it can be tiring (then again..if you are the type to hike 20+ miles a day a few minutes of pumping aren't likely to add that much to your burden..hehe..). Also..as I mentioned..using the SteriPen is much easier when the temps are near freezing. Getting ice crystals in the filter element of a pump filter sucks...

LOVE our Steripen, so effortless and convenient, will still always bring Iodine, but not the filter...
Used our new Steripen for the first time in the Narrows, Zion National Park in mid June, we did top to bottom over two days, and what a blessing it was not to have to pump. Super easy way to get fresh clean water FAST! Highly highly recommend it.

Sure was a neat trick to keep in mind...

And another quote from this thread:

<<The Steripen is not a foolproof system if you dunk your Nalgene bottle and hands into contaminated water. From the Steripen Adventurer User's Manual:

"...not intended to disinfect water above the surface of the water in the container, i.e., droplets of water suspended on the side of the glass."

"...not intended to disinfect surfaces of a drinking container, i.e. those that typically contact the mouth when drinking." >>

The steri-pen is limited to sterilizing CLEAR water. It kills the microbes that "can see the light" but it cannot kill ones lurking in crevices in the "floating brown and green bits." Unlike iodine or chlorine solutions that permeate junk in the water and can be dribbled over the bottle's lips and threads to kill microbes in those locations, the water treated with the steri-pen is just clean water with no "killing properties." So stirring the water with the pen is intended to expose all of the water to its light but again, will generally not get to critters in debris in the water.

But it is quick, handy and does not impart any tastes to water.

While the risks of getting giardia and other illnesses is supposedly small, I've had giardia a few times and did not appreciate it.

I have this pre-filter (haven't used it yet but it will do the trick):

You just screw it on to your nalgene water bottle. It weighs 1.5 oz. and dimensions are 2.7" x 1.8".

Wouldn't it be safer to use a filter, pump AND the pen? (Or filter, pump, boil and then use the pen if you want to be truly safe?) "Climbing" the main trail is dangerous enough without the added risk IMHFO...

Perhaps you could carry a portable nuclear reactor and kill anything that moves with gamma rays.

With reverse thrusters for those 96 ("No, 97!" "No, 96!" "No, 98!") switchbacks.

Now you're talkin'....
