We'll be hiking Whitney on June 28. Starting at around 3:00am and hopefully returning by 6:00pm. We'll be camping at Lone Pine Sat. night and plan on eating at Whitney Portal Store but are worried that we may not make it back in time. Are there any other decent places to eat in the area?

The pizza place across from the Dow Villa Hotel in Lone Pine has wonderful calzones!

If you have a huge appetite, there's the Totum Cafe, across the street and north of Dow Villa. Lots of meat dishes - steaks, ribs - and BIG portions.

There is an AWESOME Mexican place in Lone Pine, right on 395 and very close to the Whitney Portal Road intersections. Their burritos are incredible, plus they have great beer selection

AM/PM has a captavating array of delicacies. I find the soy burger with a dash of mustard to be simply sumptuous. A delight for the senses........the service is a little weak

Try P.J.'s...
Good, basic chow; reasonable prices; and I think they're open 24 hours, so it doesn't matter what time you come down.

The Merrygoround is the best restaurant in lone pine. the New York Steak was exceptional. For two-with wine, salad, entree, and chocolate moose was $66.00. fresh bread too. This was the best way to finish off a great trip. if you are going to do it--do it right. say hi to Eva, she owns the place--mmmmmmmmm.

The past several years I have been in the area the "Seasons" restaurant was the place to go for fine dining. I have not been in Lone Pine since last August so I cannot guarantee that they are still there. In any event, they are (were) located on the east side of 395 in Lone Pine, maybe halfway through town.

Seasons is right up there with Merrygoround, both literally and gastronomically, the only fine dining in town.

After spending 3 days on the mountain, we stopped at Carl's Jr (North end of town), for one of the best hamburgers I have ever had..(usually we go to the pizza factory). Absence of real food for a few days sure makes a difference.

At the risk of offending the purists out there, I have to say that there's nothing wrong with Mickey-D's - especially after you've burned about a billion calories on the mountain. I'm not wild about seeing the Golden Arches right on the main drag, but their fries sure do go down good after the long walk...

I am certainly not offended. I have a four year old with only three "body fat" cells in his body (he gets it from his mother). Needless to say, we go to Mac's quite a bit to make sure he gets that extra bit of fat. Unfortunately, I have always liked the food, but my wasteline is starting to complain.

Big Mac's are one of my favorites, but my kids won't let me go to McDonalds. In-n-Out would be their choice. I was surprised to see Old Mac's in town. Thank goodness they gave the building a rustic look so it fits in. At least we now have a choice and don't have to drive all the way to Majave for the celebration burger.

My favorite place in Lone Pine is Pepe's Bonanza, with its fresh salsa bar.

Pizza Factory is open until 10:00 PM Sun - Thu, and 11:00 PM Fri-Sat. Pizza is perfect after a 22 mile hike!

If you're heading to Mammoth after the trip, make sure to stop at Schat's Bakery. This is the best bakery I have ever been to and have been going for years. Try the sheaphearders bread or the potato-jalepeno-cheese bread. YUM!
