Hi,
I was wondering if helmets will be useful on the main whitney trail this weekend. I'm thinking that they won't be necessary, but thought I'd ask the forum.
Thanks for your help.

I think the prudent choice this time of year is to carry the helmet and base its use on conditions and your confort level. I'd say the same about an ice ax and crampons.

Helmets are mandatory on the main trail, but only at the tram- crossing points.

It's a little like asking if you need to wear a helmet mountain biking - the answer is no unless you do something that hits your head. I never wore a helmet on Whitney until I took my 12 year old son up the mountaineers route, when I realized that I better lead by example.

i've worn a helmet on other climbs, but didn't remember seeing them being used on the main whitney trail. guess we'll bring them!

While there's still snow on the trail, and a chance you might take a fall, I think it's a good idea. If you're thinking about glassading down, which is quick and fun, you'd be stupid not to have one. But you don't need to worry (much) about rockfall on the main trail.

I never heard anyone say "I wish I hadn't worn that helmet" yet!

be safe..
