Bob R. - Your caveats are well stated. Please do not pull this great thread. This is exactly what makes this board so valuable. It has inspired the exchange of lots of information that will promote the planning of safer and more enjoyable trips to the Whitney area. I've printed the map and will take it with me.

Rick, I won't pull it. Almost always I do that only when a topic has become OBE (overcome by events). For example, a report in February about how far you can drive up the Portal Road is meaningless two months later.

Rarely, I will remove something if it generates too much controversy, and I had decided to do that here two weeks ago. But then some responses were added that I thought contained valuable information. Right after that I ran into Kurt Wedberg at a restaurant in Bishop, and we talked briefly about exactly this.

I would be less likely to remove posts if Doug would reset my post number to zero: that number at the bottom of each post that now reads 935 or so for me. Besides being self-conscious about how much I seem to have to say, I fear that something like a Y2K may occur--when my number hits 1000, that may bring the whole WPS message board crashing down!

Bob, I haven't looked at your map in a long time so I don't know that the avalanche that spinfxr noticed in one of Rick Kent's pictures (it's in the Missing on Mt. Whitney thread) is included on it. I also noticed evidence of avalanche debris while coming down the "old trail" yesterday.

I've got pictures of the debris fields from both. After I've had a chance to get to them, I'll let you have a look.
