With the exception of Mirror Lake & the Trailside Meadow, is it OK to camp anywhere as long as we're the appropriate distance from streams & lakes? Does anyone know of any good camp locations other than Outpost & Trail Camp? We'd just as soon have a little more of a "wilderness" experience, which we've noticed in past years, is kind of hard @ Outpost & Trail Camp.
Also, does anyone know if there will be wagbag receptacles anywhere on the trail this year? Or only at the Portal?
You can pretty much camp anywhere as long as it's not at Mirror Lake, Trailside Meadow, or within 100 feet of lakes, streams and trails if terrain permits. Otherwise, at least 50 feet from lakes, streams and trails.
Judging by what was missing at Trail and Outpost Camps in February my guess is you will have to transport your WAG bag back to Whitney Portal.
There are not a lot of spots along the trail that put you close to water and away from the trail. When we are returning from the west side and run out of time we will camp at Long Pine Lake. The advantages are not many people camp there and day hikers don't make a nuisance of themselves because they do not come near enough to your campsite at 4 AM as they do at Outpost Camp.
