Saturday, 16 September 2006 Dragon Peak (12,995') via the southeast ridge Photos: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/554201517LpsGDy My weekend plans fell apart again, so I sent out an e-mail to see if anyone was hiking. BobR met me at Onion Valley, and we dayclimbed Dragon Peak! I was having altitude problems and this hike kicked my butt. But it was an awesome climb!!!

Viewing your climb photos was fun. I felt that I was there. Looking at BobR crossing the "ledge" with no hands reminds one of Spiderman! Thanks for sharing. MH

Love the photos. I did this climb this summer with the CLMRG mountaineering class and just loved it. I told one of the teachers that for me the climb was the best time I had ever had standing up or laying down! I did pucker up a couple of times due to the exposure. Had I remembered to place a charcoal brickette in my trousers I would have had a nice diamond to give to my wife when I got home. When our group got to the saddle three of the four students, I was one of the three, thought, I don't know if I can do this. I did not share my fears although the other two did and the instructors encouraged us and coerced us to go on. We did rope up for the very last part but it was more for the emotional security than anything else. All instructors and students summited! What a blast! Glad to hear that you did it. Did you think it was scary as Russell? Rafael...

Great pictures and hike! And I thought the Elephant Ear ledge on the MR was narrow!! That's like a superhighway compared to the narrow ledge near the top of this peak!
So how did the name Dead Mouse Lake come to be?

Great pictures, Snowy! The ones of Bob on the ledge and down climbing are awesome. Beautiful shots of the lakes, too. Dragon is always a fun day hike. Thanks, for sharing.

Dead Mouse lake got it's name from a previous time when members of the China Lake Mountain Rescue Group, and I believe some mountaineering class students, came to the lake to fill up water bottles on the way to climb dragon peak, and spotted a dead mouse floating on the water near the shore. That is what one of the CLMRG instructors told me.

Kenny, I saw that ledge in pics and figured I would never do it. But being with BobR, it was fun (even though I wasn't feeling 100%)
BobR, you made that climb fun and easy for me. But I think from now on I should only hike with the group on Sundays. I need Saturday to acclimatize. Looking back at the last 3 dayclimbing weekends, I wasn't feeling well on Saturday, but felt ok on Sunday. You'd think with all the hiking I do it wouldn't bother me! Thanks for taking my camera and getting me on the ledge, and thank YOU for the company!
MH, BobR is my hero!
Rafael, I almost ruined my keyboard while drinking and reading your charcoal brickette comment! The exposure didn't bother me like on Russell. I think BobR made it seem easy. And thanks for explaining Dead Mouse Lake!
Thanks, CaT, see Rafael's reply
Tomcat, SnowDude wants to do Dragon now, so we'll be going up sometime. Dragon might be a yearly trip from now on! I also want to do the Gould Traverse!
Thanks Walter! Fun hike!
Sierragator, good to see you back!
