My experience with strapping additional items to the outside of my pack differ depending on where I have chosen to attach them. I have an older external frame pack that will not hold a canister with all the other items I carry so I attach it on top of the pack or hang it from the bottom (does not move in this position). As long as items are attached along the frame line, I have never experienced an out of balance condition. I can only imagine I would have that experience if I attached a canister on the back of the pack furthest from my spine.

I have a newer internal frame pack that will hold my canister and I place it in the middle of the pack since it is the heaviest single item I carry. This position offers me the most comfort and best weight distribution.

I do not have a BV but would suggest a longer model for longer hikes.

On second thought, there doesn't seem to be any motivation for a bear cannister manufacturer to get a backpack company to design a backpack with a pocket for bear cannisters since they would be for all bear cannister makes and thus no competitive advantage.

On the other hand, it would be in the interest of a backpack manufacturer to design their backpacks with a large pocket at the bottom of the pack for a bear cannister which of course could be used for other things if the bear cannister wasn't needed.

Along the same lines as the compression sack, I placed my cannister inside my summit pack, which I then strapped to my ex-frame. I use a Camelbak pack, not sure of the model. Not sure I could do the same with my new internal frame pack, however.
