this is a late posting, but I summited on July 13th/14th. I drove up from Orange county at noon and got my permit for the 14th. I than went to the Portal and took a nap and read for a bit. The weather was warm and not a cloud in the sky. So I decided to take a gamble and hit the trail at 5:30 pm. I only planed on going to trail side meadow area and finding a spot to hang till about 1 am. I felt so good going up I was at trail camp at 9:30pm. *****ing my arse off, I desided to keep pushing and summit. 2:00 am I was on the summit and watch the shooting stars for about 45 minates. I was on my was home by 9 am on the 14th. The night summit kicks asre and I would recomed it to anyone who has summited a few times. I soloed the trip also, and I loved not having to make sure ever1 is ok.
Great trip and I'll do it anytime.

Great post leroux. My buddy is starting to waiver so I might be going solo as well. Doesn't phase me as I've done 140 miles of the Muir trail solo as once again people baled at the last minute. That was back in college and this is 30 years later but what the hay.

The night summit sounds very cool! Wish I could do it tonight (Perseid meteor shower). Do any of the Whitney regulars know if night-time summer weather is reliably clear and fair at the summit? If yes, it seems a good way to avoid afternoon tstorms.
