Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Successful sumit 8/7/06

Our group of 4 summited Mt. Whitney at 12:00 on Monday 8/7/06, after departing from trial camp at 7:30. We enjoyed cloudless skys and mild temperatures, even the wind was moderate. It's good to be lucky.

It was the first attempt for each of us, so, as you can imagine, the feelings and emotions upon topping out were overwhelming. Thank you to all of the posters to this board. Your knowlege and experience, and generousity to share it, helped to make our trip a success.

Congrats! How did you guys deal with the altitude?

We spent 2 nights at Whitney Portal campground and just did some day hikes around there. 2 of us (the men) were feeling somewhat lithargic and crummy after arriving at trail camp, but those symptoms abated after waking up on summit morning and everyone was good to go. I was surprised that they (the symptoms) did not come back after going over trail crest. I spent 10 hours in the tent at trail camp on the night before the summit attempt and I guess that was enough time to acclimate. I also believe the fact that we were all in good health and generally fit help us to avoid ACMS.
