I have been looking for maps of the Mt. Whitney summit trail and the surrounding area, but I have been unable to find a high quality map. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good map?

You might try Tom Harrison Cartography.

The whitney Portal Store had Two (2) different versions of the summit and surrounding areas last year. I have studied them in the off chance I might make an attempt for the summit.

I used the following :

http://www.latimes.com/media/acrobat/2003-10/9791524.pdf

It's all you'll really need if you stick to the trail.

They carried the Tom Harrison maps when I was there last week. They are very easy to follow and read.

I ordered mine from the website mentioned above, they came in quickly, I think like the 3rd day including the day I ordered them.

And don't overlook the ones Wayne has made available. You can access the thread here:

The Tom Harrison map is of Sequoia national park so the Whitney area is only a very small piece of the map.

My favorite maps of the Whitney area are the laminated maps I bought at the Whitney Portal Store. They are available in the Whitney area itself and the expanded Whitney area.

I find the 7.5 series maps best if you need them for land navigation. The Tom Harrison Maps are great for planning. The Portal Store map is great for the main trail but can't be used for land navigation because it lacks long/lat or UTM grids.

I own all three but only take the 7.5' maps up the trail.

I found several maps of Whitney and surrounding JM wilderness, High Sierra trail, PCT at the Lone Pine new Ranger Station. I did buy the High Sierra trail packet which contains 3 NGS quadrant maps - very detailed, showing all the details you need for a multi-day hike.

Tom Harrison has a map of the Whitney Zone that is smaller than the one for the whole Park that Jessica mentioned (also Tom has a smaller, more detailed map of the Kearsarge Pass area, and one for Bishop Pass which works well for the whole Lake Sabrina area). If you just want a map of the Whitney Zone it is perfect.

The 7.5's are great too, but I think that the Harrison maps are more durable, and they do what I need, which is largely just to help me verify the other peaks I am looking at from the summit of the one I'm on.

Also, another option that I have used in the past is to use software such as Topo, MapSource, or National Geographic that is used with a GPS device, but instead of loading a route into the GPS, I just get the contour lines to a nice fine scale, zoomed into the peak or area of interest and print it out and take that with me.

I have Tom Harrison's Whitney Zone map, and it is just about perfect.

It goes from Williamson on the north, to just south of New Army Pass on the south, from the Portal to Mt. Guyot.

This scale allows you to identify many features a few miles off.

Another interesting map is the Mt. Whitney Adventure Map produced by SierraMaps.com

The trail and contour line are overlaid on a high altitude photo of the area. One side has a detailed map of the trail and the other side is a broad area overview of the area.

I frequently use Harrison maps, that the others have reccommended, for trips in the Sierra and they are excellent.
