You would think the guy that started this topic would have heard back by now but NOOOOO! I applied February 10 and gave 9 options 4 in Aug and 5 in Oct. My mail lady must think I have drugs or some sort of contraband coming in the mail ...

Jackalopes,

Don't worry you are in like Flynn with those October dates. Just hope and pray that winter doesn't come early...if you are snowphobic.

Go thee to your credit card company and stop beating a path to your mail box ;-).

Well, maybe I'm twisted, alright I AM twisted, but I feel so much better now just knowing that HikerLaura isn't in yet. It just shows that there isn't some vast right wing conspiracy involved and that soon all will be set right with the world and my bank page will hit and my mail box will bring forth it's only true good tidings. Hope is restored. Thank you HL! They would NEVER keep you out so the rest of us louts can rest easy knowing the process is not nearly finished yet. P.S. If you get your notice tomorrow, keep it to yourself and allow me my delusions...

Got my seven permits yesterday, for 8/25 to 8/30

Taking the long way around, NAP to Mitre Basin to Crabtree, then back around to Guitar and up & over.

Done this trip once before, two years ago, buy staying on trail via rock creek & Guyot pass.

So, question for the group, and it's vast wisdom:

My last day, 8/30 is for trail crest. I would like to spend the night of 8/29 at trail camp, and then have an easy hike out on 8/30. Does "Trail Crest" include *just* the pass, or any portion east of it? (I've done guitar lake to portal in a day with full b-pack gear, have no wish to do it again.)

I've gone over Trail Crest early on a couple of occasions and neither one of them got me in trouble.

Prior to one of the early crossings, Rob P. (Crabtree NP Ranger) stopped me to look at my permit. I showed him it and stated that I'd be crossing early. He said he didn't care as long as I had a valid permit for the trip I was on.

When I mentioned this to a FS Ranger, they seemed bothered by the fact that the Trail Crest Permit date didn't match the exit date. I guess this means you might get in trouble if you get stopped on the Inyo (East) side of the moutain.

You're not alone..I sent mine in early Feb., with a pretty wide range of choices (first 3 weeks in July, any one nighter, 4 people) but no word, check wasn't cashed.

I suppose if you don't get in by the 15th, with new entries coming every day your odds go down considerably. It's a bit depressing in some ways, but there are lots of other places to go I guess. Or maybe I'll try a walk-in, but it's a long drive if it doesn't work.

Everyone stop ringing your hands! If you didn't get a permit in the mail, rest ASSURED, there WILL be permits available this summer.Myself and friends got all we needed last summer. Just walk in to the new visitor center, put yourself on the list and wait for a permit to be cancelled. Two hours tops.

Life happens! People are going to get sick/injured, an emergency will happen in their lives, they'll CHICKEN OUT...as so many of my buddies did as the date of the big hike drew close.

Granted, getting a permit on the weekends is tough, but if you can get up to Lone pine on the week days, you have a stellar chance of snatching a permit, even for groups.Multiple overnights yet, up to 5 days! And they're FREE!!! And you know what the weather's going to be like instead of predicting it 6 months inadvance and getting your butt stormed off the mountain just a half mile from the summit.

Even if the Ranger District begins charging for no-shows, I'll gladly pay the price.

Whitney Permit-free
Sleeping in your car instead of pricey motel-free
Summiting Whitney- Priceless!

Sherry, I'm a little confused about the walk-in process (there are just too many variables). I applied for an overnight for two people in August (weekday). I think the walk-in process would force me to wait until 11:00 AM of the day I want to start. That's awfully late (and awfully uncertain). Isn't there any way to obtain a walk-in permit commencing the following day?

The 11am time applies to both no-shows and cancellations. Nonetheless, cancellations are for entry the FOLLOWING day. If enough people are courteous enough to cancel their reservations, there will be permits available for the following day.

Quote:
From Wilderness Permit Options Step 6:
For an overnight permit, show up at the Visitors Center by 11 am for no-shows and cancellations. No-shows for entering on the current day become available at 11 am. Cancellations that have not been re-reserved for entering the FOLLOWING day also become available at 11 am.
You also have the option to call the wilderness permit office before you leave to check on cancellations, up to two days before the entry date.

No word yet but I am hopeful. I listed 25 separate two-day, one-night dates, all of which were midweek. Many of those dates were late September, early October. Last year however, I think it was October 10th or so, there was that early snow so you never know what's going to happen.

I'm limited on my vacation time. I put in for two dayhike permits mid-week. Plus I reserved my campsite months before the lottery. Still waiting, wish me luck.

Still no word....If I havnt heard back by April 1st I have to assume my letter was lost with my 90$ Money order. That is if there are still permits for June 5th And 6th for 6 people. I just hope I can get something around those same dates. I chose those because of the availability from last year.

Well, well, well, guess what just hit my credit card? I'm in. Thank God! Don't know the date but I'll take anything.

Good luck everybody. Take this as a sign that they're still working their way through the applications. Stay positive.

It encourages me to see people still getting their notifications. It gives me hope that I will see the check cashed soon. I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE..... I too will climb the mountain. I BELIEVE.
