We wanted to hike from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine Lake but there was a big "road closed" sign in the middle of the road this past weekend. We turned around and did the hike from Lone Pine Campground almost all the way to Whitney Portal. One of our group did make it all the way to the Portal and he said people were driving around the "road closed" sign. Supposedly the Portal campground is going to be open to the public next weekend so I guess the road will be open by then. He also said there is still quite a bit of snow at the Portal. He intended to go all the way to Lone Pine Lake but had trouble staying on the trail. He had no map, compass or GPS. As for the weather, it was gorgeous all weekend; we saw no signs of storm activity on the mountain but there's still plenty of snow up there. Good luck!
Most everyone ignores the sign but you do so knowing the risks.
There really isn't much snow at the Portal, some beyond the store, in the picnic area and main parking lot, that is unless its been plowed in the last 9 days since I was there.
