Taking my bro' up Whitney for the first time, but I've not done the MR this late in the season - usually always done it in the spring. I'm trying to get a sense if there's snow and ice enough to warrant crampons and an axe. We'll have all of this junk in the truck, but would rather not schlep it if not needed. He's a pretty good rock climber, but he is a bit nervous about snow and ice. Also, last time I was up there I was told about a vertical section of climbing that takes you to the summit, so you avoid the long traverse around to the backside of the mountain. Supposedly it's just before the traverse, once you top out of the chute. How tough is this? Would we need pro? Rock shoes? Or is it more of a scramble?

Any beta from ya'll September regulars would be appreciated.

While you should take what you need based on your abilities, most folks do not have ice axes, crampons or any pro for the MR this time of year. The chute just below the summit is considered class 3 or 4 depending on who you ask. Some people take a short length of rope for this section as well as for the E-ledges, but they are generally climbed without roping up. It's not a bad idea to bring a climbing helmet for the chute above iceberg lake, since there are often climbers on the east face above you and rockfall from above happens.

We're doing the MR on 9/10. We expect to climb the chute referred to above and won't be taking any equipment to speak of other than minimal warm clothing and food.

You can find numerous photos of the climb up the chute at the notch. Several variations are described in a few albums here. Check out "0 Whitney Miscellany" for a start.

Good luck on Thursday!

RLfstop,

We're doing a day hike. Up the MR and down the trail. Hopefully in time for one of Doug's burgers before the grill closes! (although last year I slowed our group down enough to where it wasn't even close... frown )
