Hows the weather been at the portal.
My yearly Whitney trip is on in two weeks?
You would think after 15 trips I would go to the
summit.

Edit: 15 trips all for camping one day I will try the hike.

Take a look at the weather for Lone Pine. The next 10 days show nice weather with some chance of rain....like afternoon thunderstorms.

http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USCA0630?from=search_city

Just drop down about 4 degrees per 1000 feet to get an idea about the temperature at the portal or elsewhere.

www.395.com also has a more local weather link which includes the mountains.

You can compare this with the sensor station up at cottonwood lakes (15 miles south) at 10150 feet up. http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryF?CWD

Nextdrink, I'm only asking this question because there are so many posts on this board that are only meant in jest. Do you really mean you've attempted 15 years in a row, and never made it to the summit? No offense meant, if it's really true, then good for you for having the guts to keep trying.

My wife, kids, and I just returned from camping at Whitney Portal from Aug 22-25. The weather was beautiful. Low 70's at the portal during the day and mid 40's during the night.

Prior to our arrival, however, there were severe afternoon thunder storms the previous five days. Flooding from the storms caused two deaths and closed the roads into Death Valley.

Kind regards,

Mark A. Patton

I have a question for Richard. I too will be up this weekend for my first attempt to climb Whitney and have been searching the weather sites for any possible signs of rain (I like rain) with no luck. So your mentioning that there is a chance of rain really gave me hope but where did you get this info? Or is this just a standard mountain weather forecasting? Thanks.

Josh - Here is the URL for the National Weather Service's page for the area including Mt. Whitney. There is no weather instrument/observation station on Whitney itself.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/wrhq/TotalForecast.csh?TotalForecast+WR+CA+026+027

Then, here is the URL for the temperature for the past 10 days at nearby Cottonwood Lakes (10,500').

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryLonger?459

Next, here is the URL for the national radar loop from the National Weather Service (very helpful to see what precipitation is coming and from where -- I opted for the national radar loop because the Whitney area is in kind-of a local radar viewing black hole):

http://weather.noaa.gov/radar/mosaic.loop/DS.p19r0/ar.us.conus.shtml

And finally, here is the URL for the western U.S. satellite loop from the National Weather Service:

http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/images/wcirloop.gif

One or more of these should be helpful in seeing what is coming to Whitney and/or in seeing the temperature trend.

CaT

PS - Here's a really cool freebie for everyone's viewing pleasure -- the URL to one of Environment Canada's global view satellite images. You'll enjoy this one if you've never seen it! Environment Canada is the Canadian equivalent of the USA's National Weather Service. Below the image, you can select how many frames you want to include in a loop, and then above the image, click "play" and watch it go. There is a large version of this same image, but it's only a still shot without the ability to play a loop; so I opted to provide the medium size image here, because watching it loop is pretty cool:

http://weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/satellite/...ges=1&clf=1

(the above is all one very long URL)

Josh K: From about the 15th of July through late August the Moonsoonal flow (which causes Huricanes) blows warm moisture up through California. This often leads to afternoon thunderstorms, even though the weather forecast calls for sunny weather down in town.

If the weather says "0%" chance of rain I feel confident this late in August. If the forecast says 20% or 30% chance of rain I just count on Afternoon thunderstorms and hope for the best.
It is just my best guess, based on the last 10 years or so hiking in the area.

Mt. Whitney weather is forecasted by the Las Vegas office of the NWS. Go here:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lasvegas/index.shtml

and click on Bishop on the map.

The current synopsis is:

SYNOPSIS...A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL GRADUALLY MOVE SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE AREA LATE TODAY AND FRIDAY. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO COOL SLIGHTLY FRIDAY WITH A SLOW WARMING TREND THIS WEEKEND. ANY MOISTURE IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN WELL NORTH OF THE AREA.

...or you could just go to the first URL in my most recent post above, which is the same, but with Bishop already selected, etc.
