We are hiking from Onion Valley to Portal. Where is the best and easiest place to get maps of this route from? As I live in Tennessee, I will have to get them shipped.

Call either Wilson's Eastside Sporting Goods in Bishop or Pasadena Map in Pasadena. However, I don't know if either does mail order but both will usually have the maps in stock.

This trip is 6 or 7 7.5' USGS Quads.

folks may differ on this, but my opinion is that the best maps available are produced by Tom Harrison, with significant details not found on the USGA maps, along with milages. The are also shaded, which gives a much better representation of the terrain. They sell directly:

If you are only interested in Whitney, the Mt. Whitney Zone map has the most detail, if a wider area, the Mt. Whitney High Country is better.

Ken,

What the Harrison Maps givth in shaded relief they taken away in clarity.

The Harrison Maps are 1:63,000 =/-
USGS 7.5' Series are 1: 24,000

My old tired eyes need all the help they can get :-). Nat'l G and Topo Zone can give you shaded relief waterproof paper, UTM grid line, 1:24,000 and customization of area for ~$10.

If you are starting your Whitney journey from a Horseshoe Meadow Trailhead the Harrison Maps start a long way from the trailhead.

I like Harrison Maps for planning but prefer 7.5' format for travel.

Uh, actually, the Tom Harrison maps for Whitney Zone are 1:31,680, with the superior contrast, good for even my old eyes.......

Ken,

The trip is from OV to WP. I am somewhat familiar with the Harrison Maps. The only one I've seen which give total coverage is King-Sequoia Recreational Map which 1: 100,000+

I've used 1:31,680+/- maps, Nat'l G Quads, the problem I have with them is the scale itself, the same problem I have with 1:24,000 metric quads. I don't see enough of it to ever reach a comfort level with them. Then there is the UTM scale...

You like Mc Donalds; I like In and Out.
