Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Alternative to Trail Camp & Consultation Lake

My hiking partner and I are leaving for Whitney in two days. We've heard some negative things about camping at both Trail Camp and Consultation Lake, but also heard that there may be another camping possibility -- a smaller lake, located a little higher than the turnoff for Consulation Lake (and on the righthand side of the trail). Anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

Sounds like you are talking about the pond at Trail Camp. The pond is to the right of the trail at Trail Camp. Trail Camp & this pond is at the start of the 97 switchbacks. Consultation Lake is lower and a few hundred yards off the trail.

You may be talking about Whitney Lakes. They are situated just above Trail Camp...Just northwest and about 300 ft. higher. It's a rock scramble to get up there though and I haven't heard of any established camp site in that area, although one of my buddies has stayed there & loved it. If it's your first time you may definitely want to stay at Trail Camp so you can get an early start up the switchbacks the next day.
