I have a group of 12 going to summit Whitney on the main trail, 9/21 to 9/23/2004. Most of us don't know each other. About 8 are from a gym/racquetball club in Fresno. One person had a triple bypass last week, so he and his son are out; and it looks like one more may be dropping out. Age range is 17 to late fifties with 20's and 40's in between, and all are in pretty good shape.

The scoop and the dilemma: We are having a dinner on 7/9 to meet, and to get to know each other a little, in Fresno (Dan Gamel's Health and Racquet Club); a doctor in our group who has summitted Whitney before will be giving a brief presentation on altitude sickness, and handle questions on whatever you would like to ask. We are also scheduling the first group-together-hike the following weekend, 7/16, 17 to either Mt. Conness (about 12,590 with a little class 3) or White Mountain Peak (or another suggestion). If anyone is interested, please email me or respond here on the board. I'd like to find people that can at least make the 7/9 dinner, and hopefully the excursion the following weekend.

Talus, tell that bypass guy to get out there and show 'em! It sounds like the trip is ~14 weeks after his operation.

I had a bypass in 2001. Admittedly mine was "only" a single bypass, but there were some complications that set me back considerably. Nevertheless, in six weeks I was back doing easy day climbs, and at the 13 week point I climbed Mt. Pickering. It's an elevation gain of 6700', 23 miles round trip, so equivalent to Whitney.

Three weeks after that, I managed an overnight up the MR and, a week and a half later, a day climb of the main trail.

Hey, it's only a rearrangement of some plumbing!

I have forwarded your note to a friend of mine in Fresno who has dropped out of our mid-August day hike.

As an x-Fresnan (moved out of town 20-years ago), I wish you all a successful trip. My first trip up Whitney was with the Fresno YMCA while @ McLane High School in 1966. Last trip was a day hike two years ago that included people from Fresno.

Bob R. - I never tire of reading your posts and thanks for the excellent article on water quality.

Talus,

Since I missed you a few weeks ago maybe you want to do the piggyback ride in September.I need to know how much you weigh so I can start adjusting the amount of rocks I'll be training with in my pack.I think I'm ready. After carrying my 270lbs and a 42 lb.pack to Trail Camp and summiting on my first ever attempt, you should be easy.

I am very interested in doing this hike. I had a 4 permits to hike Whitney 6/20-6/21. Because everyone else flaked out on me, I was only able to try to summit in one day. I was not able to for a couple reasons and am very anxious to summit. Please let me know if you still are looking for people. My email address is: _leo@chile.com

Hey fish, if you want a spot for 9/21, 22, 23 to Whitney, you got it. By the way, for this weekend, July 16 and 17, I sent out about 15 invitations for a Mt. Conness summit. We are staying over Friday night at Sawmill Campground (near Saddlebag Lake Road turnoff, just about a mile or two East of Yosemite's Tioga Pass entrance/exit); and leoalej, you too probably can have a Sept Whitney spot ... I'll let you know soon. Anyway, anyone who is interested in the 7/16 & 17 Conness hike, let me know.

your welcome fish - sounds like you had a great Whitney summer. I was able to make my first summit on 8/7; and I may try to go all the way on the MR on 9/23.
