I heard you can rent one from Whitney Portal store, anybody please correct me if I'm wrong.

It might be easier to rent one at the Ranger Station when you pick up your permit.

Portal Store also sells the 'standard' Garcia at cost (around $50). I bought one and it is great to arrive all packed and ready to go...

you can also rent bearikades, which weigh about half of the Garcia plastic can's weight: http://wild-ideas.net/index2.html

They have an online rental progam.
