Im planning a trip in early July to Tyndall and Williamson and havent been able to locate any maps or details of the trail online. Does anyone have websites they can pass along?

Hey Glutton,

Mt. Williamson and Tyndall via the Shepherd Pass trail is a great trip! We did it last year around the middle of July and had a great time.

What route are you taking up Williamson? What about Tyndall?

In answer to your questions, here are some good links to trip reports and info:

http://www.snwburd.com/bob/trip_reports/williamson_2.html

If you are doing the West Face route of Williamson, do not take lightly how long it will take to cross the Williamson Bowl to get to the base of the mountain. I can't remember exactly how long it took us to cross the Bowl, but it was definitely longer than we thought it would take.

Summitpost always has good info on various peaks throughout the Sierras. Bob Burd just did Trojan and Barnard in a day, and another guy just summited via the West Ridge.

I havent actually planned the route yet because I havent found any decent info. Although, interestingly, when I typed in Sheperd's Pass (rather than Shepard's Pass) I got tons more info back. Do you have an exact route or itinerary you used? Im going July 1-3 and want to both Tyndall and Williamson. I hope I have enough time. I would love to ask you more questisons

A friend of mine gets all his maps from www.topozone.com. The maps are water-resistant and tear-proof. Apparently you define the area that you want on the map. I haven't tried it yet.

You might want to get "The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails", by RJ Secor. It gives route descriptions for all the peaks in the Sierra.

A more focused book would be "Hiking and Climbing California's Fourteeners"
by Steven F. Porcella, Cameron M. Burns ...this gives DETAILED information on all the routes up the mountains. There are others, but I think these are the best.

There are also detailed trip descriptions at www.climber.org

I have always wanted to climb Mt. Williamson. I am wondering how many people are you climbing with and if is possible that I may go. For many years I've been meaning to go there, unfortunately none of my friends like to climb or like outdoor activities for that matter so it's been hard for me to go places like this. Although I've taken trip alone before, Mt. Williamson seems to be very vast place so I would prefer to go here with at least another person. Let me know.

Thank you,

I think (and I don't have a map with me) that it is actually "Shepherd Pass".

cgaliano, this is often a problem for us, who love the outdoors.

My first climb of Williamson was 4 years ago, via George Creek. a week before I was leaving, I posted the trip on www.outdoorsclub.org, and a fellow who was a very capable mountaineer signed up, and we had a great trip.

I've done over a hundred trips since, using that source for finding partners for my adventures.

Another place to post a trip that you might want to do, is www.climber.org.

g'luck!

Its going to be my first attempt up. Ive already got a permit good for July 1-3. When I called last week, there were only a couple left. If you are interested in going, I would certainly enjoy the company. You can email me at sbkurtz@bigfoot.com.

The books Ive consulted (namely Secor), dont seem to give me a concise trip plan. Ive poured through other web logs, etc, but I cant seem to determine more than Sheperd's Pass is 13 miles of pretty tough terain. Somewhere along the pass are Tyndall and Williamson. There is also some climbing to do to summit either, but supposedly its not too tough. Is this about it?

Secor believes that a mountaineer would want to, in essence, discover the route for themselves, with only bare information to guide them, rather than a step-by-step guidebook approach.

The second book I mentioned (Burns) give a much more detailed route description.

Me an a couple of friends did this trip last July 10-12. We had a blast. Day one: up shepard pass, hiked south to a lake at the foot of Tyndall's north face, camped. Day two: went s.e down into williamson bowl to the southeasternmost lake in the bowl, up the west face chute to the chimney (the most fun part of the climb), topped out on the summit plateau, summitted/back to camp. Day three: up the north rib of Tyndall and back down, packed up and hiked out to the trailhead. Some rugged cross country travel to be sure but well worth it! Have fun!
