I am interested in finding the hotel nearest to the trailhead.

That would be in Lone Pine, 13 miles from the trailhead...many to choose from

Those in Lone Pine are not at the highest altitude.

Lone Pine is at ~3,660' but it's close to trailhead.

Go to Mammoth, it's luxury at 9,000 feet! Or Rock Creek, at similar elevation, to stay in a "lodge" for $100+ a night! From the south, any ski resort will do for altitude. Big Bear, Baldy, all afford lodging. Tioga Pass will be happy to take your money as well. You need not camp or sleep on rocks to get up there in altitude!

Just finished looking around. We're staying in Mammoth the first night (8,000'), then the next day we're day hiking around Rock Creek Lake. It's a half hr south of Mammoth and looks like it has a nice easy trailhead at 10,000 ft. That night we're camping at the portal. Planning a 3 day ascent w/ camping at trail camp.

That way we get 2 nights at 8000', some acclimation at 10,000, and a night at 12,000 b4 hitting the summit.

Hopefully that will work!
