I'll be hiking the JMT starting June 25th. We are taking a month to do it(north to south)so we can peak bag along the way. Its amazing to me how much planning this requires as I've spent my afternoon off trying to figure out how to get back to Yosemite from Whitney and still haven't made much progress. I've made numerous calls to the Crest and Yarts bus services but it seems like their schedules don't connect. It would take three days to get back!

You guys seem to have a wealth of knowledge so maybe I can pick your brains and figure this out so I'm not stressing!

Thanks, Karin

How about two days? Finish your hike and get one of the shuttle services on the east side to take you to Mammoth. Grab the YART bus to the valley the next day. You can search for NUMEROUS references to eastern Sierra shuttle services on this message board.

Probably the best and cheapest way is to go around asking other people at the Portal for a ride north on 395. Offer maybe 25-50 dollars for the trouble to take you. Once you make it to Mammoth, there's camping and lodging, and then you can take the YARTS bus over to Yosemite Valley. It comes once a day early in the morning. Check their schedule at yarts.com.

I picked up a flyer at the Bishop USFS ranger station a couple years ago, with a professional shuttle service that will take you anywhere. A lift from the Portal to Yosemite Valley might run $200, though, but you'd be back there quickly.

I used to hitchhike decades ago, and while this may be dangerous and unreliable now, it can be free. I'd offer maybe $100 for someone on this board to come forward, as there's a fair chance that some other hiker could use the money.

Another thought is to split the Muir Trail hike into two parts. Go from Happy Isles to Mammoth, then use YARTS to get back to your car in Yosemite. Then leave your car in Mammoth, hike to the Portal, then hire a taxi or find transport back to Mammoth. It's only about 100 miles one way, so that would go fast. You can use South Lake or whatever other east side entry instead of Mammoth, too.

Good luck, this is a common query on this board. Few do the Muir Trail at once, so there's little demand for this. If you live locally, ask a friend or neighbor. The Eastern Sierra is so beautiful, it'd be a pleasure for me, although I rarely make it all the way down to Whitney.

I don't think the YART was available when I did the JMT in 1999. I looked all over the place for shuttles.

Figuring we'd feel more enterprising before the hike, we left our truck in Lone Pine (across from the police station--seemed pretty safe). We caught the night greyhound bus up to the tioga pass cutoff. At 1:00am we arrived to our pre-reserved, overpriced hotel that's right near the intersection. After a good breakfast at the cafe, we walked up to the huge gas station near the tioga pass cutoff and held up our sign, "Hikers Need Ride To Tuolumne". Many cars were full of vacationers, but a couple of climbers gave us a ride. At 2pm we caught the hikers' bus from Tuolumne to the valley. Another hitch would probably have got us there more quickly.

The real challenge was hitching from Whitney Portal down to Lone Pine after 10 days of hiking and no shower. A pair of New Zealanders who had tagged Whitney without permits in new boots (sore-footed) gave us a ride down to Lone Pine.

The YART sounds a lot more efficient.
