Oh..I'm a wizard with a topo map and a compass...one of the side benefits of being a pilot for a living.. smile And I have a very nice Garmin GPSMap 76 into which I can load topo maps...it's a wonderful little tool.

Sierra Sam:

Would you say that the current snow conditions on the MR--soft,slushy snow--make the first chute from the Notch to the summit plateau more difficult or less? I'm trying to decide between the first chute or simply traversing west in these current conditions.

since I haven't been up there lately, I can't specifically answer your question from putting foot to ground - the only meaningful measure. Unless it is very icy on the traverse, I would personally be comfortable on either route. If the traverse were very hard snow or icy to the point that I didn't think that I could self arrest, I would opt for the chute, which I generally prefer in any case. However, you should not decide what you can do based on my skills, experience, etc. since you may have very different abilities, and risk tolerance. I once watched an unroped guy cross a 300 foot wide very steep snow field in soft, deep snow conditions with a 2000 foot vertical drop-off below it . He was slipping and sliding and we thought that we would be calling in a rescue team to find the body. His climbing buddy was laughing and encouraging him on. We were roped up and put 2 snow pickets in for protection. We thought he was an idiot and he probably thought that we were sissies. Fortunately, we were both drinking beer in the climbing hut that night.

Last year, my brother and I successfully completed the Main Trail. This year we are contemplating attempting the MR.

We've looked at a variety of images posted to this site such as http://members12.clubphoto.com/_cgi-bin/getImage.pl?imgID=13368497-f0af&trans=. We want to ease into the mountain route so what we would like to know is what is the easiest path up the route?

Could someone please mark the easiest path in the image of the chutes referenced above say in green and key some pics to the path? That would really help us and others who are planning on doing the MR for the very first time.

Whits, the birds eye view photo you show looks so different than the view from ground level. I went up the first blue line as you leave the chute, and probably would not have gone that way without seeing a trio descending. I remember a mantle type move to get on the route and the rest was a piece of cake, up that is, without a rope we did not feel comfortable descending the same and opted for the traverse. I would never use the traverse in icy conditions!

You may want to climb White Mtn or at least sleep overnight at the top gate. The top gate is at 11,688'. You need a 4WD or high clearance vehicle to get there. The area is nice relatively near Mt. Whitney. You may want to climb White Mtn as a warm up. It has a road to the summit, although you need to hike it about 7 miles to the summit. Plus, the summit of White Mtn is just under the altitude of Whitney at 14246'(Whitney 14491').

I live in Colorado ( from NH) and am tackling the 14er's here. LOng's is on my list for this summer, the info on this thread has been great. I also want to do Whitney, I never get a permit, but after this great discussion and wealth of info I will no doubt do the MR route for sure. This board is very enjoyable, both for it's incredible wealth of beta, and the helpfullness of it's member's.
Hey Beach, you have to go through Yosemite no matter what else you do. Coming from NH , Ill never forget standing in that Valley for the first time, there are no words that can convey it so I wont try. Have fun, good luck on Whitney.

Thanks Rockman..we are really looking forward to it and you are right, this board is outstanding and a wealth of information.

If you are doing Longs you can get some pretty good advice and input on "The Trailhead" message board..which specializes in RMNP stuff..that's where I collected all our information about Longs Peak. Here's the link:

And if you'd like..drop me your address via e-mail and I'll send you our DVD that we made of our hike up Longs...it has some great pictures and video..music..I think you'd enjoy it. smile
