Hi. I'm planning a John Muir Trail thru hike, N to S, this summer. I *thought* I'd read somewhere about a reservations-only bus (or maybe "jitney" is more appropriate) that I could use to get from Whitney Portal back up north somewhere -- preferably Yosemite Valley, but Lee Vining, etc., would be OK. Did I make this up? What do other people do? I'll have a young teenager with me, so I would just as soon not try hitchiking.

Have you tried the search function on this board? I know this or a similiar subject has been discussed in the past on the board. If you come up with nothing by trying the search function there's enough people here that can probably answer your questions.

I remember someone mentioning something about a bus/shuttle service that ran out of the Ridgecrest/China Lake/Inyokern area.

There is a retired guy named John who lives in Lone Pine. His number is 760-876-4545. He does prearranged shuttles for hire. You call him and make a reservation. He charged us $75 for a transfer from Horshoe Meadows to Onion valley.

Another similar alternative is Wilderhouse Shuttle Service at (888) 313-0151. They run a B&B in I think Indepedence.

...and also... wink

How can one get from Whitney Portal into Lone Pine? Certainly I could strike up conversations with any number of people on the way down, but is there bus or something as well?

No bus, but you won't have any trouble getting a ride at the store, especially after a thru-hike... it's so interesting hearing about other people's experiences and comparing notes.

Last summer I got a ride down to Lone Pine so fast I was really kinda dissapointed because I had wanted to hang out at the store a little longer!
