As of 4-6-04, 3:00 pm, Whitney Portal Road is now OPEN. We will keep it that way as long as the weather conditions permit.

Best Wishes

Mac, on another thread, a poster mentioned that a gate would be installed to block off the Whitney Portal Road, as per the Inyo County Road Department. Do you know anything about this?

Ken,

Blaze_whitney is correct. There is talk of putting a permanent gate across Whitney Portal Road. My understanding is that it has been "discussed" for many years, and maybe for many more.
I know that the current discussions are; legal, political, and how long/under what conditions should it be closed (ie: all winter or just during the opening process). Hope this helps.

Best Wishes,
Mac
