My friend and I just got out whitney high country map from REI and were hoping for a map with greater details of the MR and Whitney trails. Are there any better maps available? Perhaps in Lone Pine? We are headed down in three days and don't have time to order another one.

I personally think that Tom Harrison maps are the best out there. His one for Whitney is quite good. You should be able to buy it from many sources. You don't say where you are coming from, but I think they have them at the Visitor Center in Lone Pine, and at Wilson's in Bishop.

Also, you could print the map off of topozone, with whatever detail you desire.

Harrison Cartography publishes several maps covering Whitney. It sounds like you have the larger one "Map of the Mount Whitney High Country" which is at 1:63,360 with 80' countour intervals. They also publish a map of the Mt Whitney Zone at 1:31,680', also at 80' countour intervals. You can get this map at Lone Pine Sporting Goods. They also carry the USGS Mt Whitney 7.5 minute quad (metric).

In the meantime, <a href=http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=36.5786&lon=-118.2925>Topozone</a> is pretty handy.

Have you looked at www.topozone.com? They send you waterproofed, lightweight maps for the exact area that interests you. My friend ordered one for a hike near home where I had to get 2 maps 'cuz my area went across boundaries. My maps were awkward to fold, heavy paper, that faded on the creases. I was envious.

I have a hate affair with the Harrison maps for travel but they are great for planning. Personally, I use 7.5' USGS maps exclusively or for Mt. Whitney the Portal Store's map which is 1:24000 just like the USGS quads.

It's probably conincidence but the people I see in the wilderness hopelessly lost have Harrison maps. I had one guy ask me where the PCT was and he was standing on it...LOL.

Also, if you are going out of Horseshoe Meadow the Harrison map doesn't pick up the trail until the Cottonwood Lakes Basin.

In the past, Whitney Portal Store has had the best map of the area. It is about 8 x 12, covers just the Whitney zone area. I hope they still carry it.
