I agree about the Mobile station, their pizza and potato salad is the best.

Actually Tioga Pass usually opens in May, as early as May 15 in 2001. The past 2 years they've opened the weekend of Memorial Day in late May.

If Secor is right, it would seem to imply that the peak is either incredibly difficult, or incredibly remote, perhaps both. Otherwise, why wouldn't it have been climbed yet?

Sounds like I'll have to give the Whoa Nellie Delli another try next time around (fish tacos?? -- I like tacos, and I like fish ... we'll see).

Over the years I've created a list of most of the named peaks in the Sierras. My list shows six 13ers south of Corcoran! Joe Devel is the most southern. Here are the southern-most seven, from the southern-most going north (with degrees latitude):

You will find very fine dining at the Mono Inn. It looks out on Mono Lake and it fits the description of the building you are describing california-trailwalker. It's a bit north of Lee Vining. We never miss having at least 1 meal there when we are camping in Tuolumne.

The unclimbed peak definitely makes me curious. I think if I ever did figure out what it was AND climbed it, I wouldn't tell anyone! The mystery makes it better each time you are out there to think you might find it and climb it.

Scott, I noticed the extent of the digression some posts ago, and feel badly that I started it. My apologies to Rockman117; I should have created a new topic. In my defense, my initial post began with a comment about Mt. Dana. But then I took things elsewhere.

However, something good has come of it - I now know what I will be doing the last weekend in July.

It's all good, I got my original question regarding Tioga rd answered very quickly and efficiently for sure. The direction this post has gone is great, as I am looking to these boards to educate myself on the Sierra's, so I know as much as possible when I move there in a year or so.
P.S> I think the fish taco's are very good, spent a summer in the area a few years back and found the food at that station quite adequet, of course I sleep and eat out of my truck most of the time, so I'm not sure my reccomendations carry much weight.

Yeah I cant wait to be in the Sierra for sure, I have only done a few peaks there and only one 14er. Once I bag a few more in Colorado next season Ill be climbing in the Sierras, not sure yet where Ill hang my helmet but hopefully will be close to the big peaks. Speaking of the Sierra I have failed twice to get a Whitney permitt, so I will just sit tight and bag it as a day hike when I move there.
