Jim R: Sure, I'd love to go. It's in ink on my calendar.
I know about Secor's comment, but I don't have a clue. I have wondered if he's just being provocative. Reminds me of Fermat's Last Theorem.

Yeah, Tom, you're probably right. It's probably better that it's unknown, but doesn't it make you curious?

I agree about the Mobile station, their pizza and potato salad is the best.
Actually Tioga Pass usually opens in May, as early as May 15 in 2001. The past 2 years they've opened the weekend of Memorial Day in late May.

Bob - great. We'd love to have you come along with us. I can't wait to hear some more of your great stories.
If Secor is right, it would seem to imply that the peak is either incredibly difficult, or incredibly remote, perhaps both. Otherwise, why wouldn't it have been climbed yet?

Sounds like I'll have to give the Whoa Nellie Delli another try next time around (fish tacos?? -- I like tacos, and I like fish ... we'll see).

Over the years I've created a list of most of the named peaks in the Sierras. My list shows six 13ers south of Corcoran! Joe Devel is the most southern. Here are the southern-most seven, from the southern-most going north (with degrees latitude): Named Peaks Elev. Latitude Joe Devel 13,325 36.515 Mt. Kaweah l3,802 36.526 Mt. Pickering 13,485 36.527 Red Spur 13,183 36.529 Second Kaweah 13,460 36.533 Mt. Chamberlin 13,169 36.534 Mt. Corcoran 13,760 36.538 If anyone knows of others, please let me know. Happy climbing!

You will find very fine dining at the Mono Inn. It looks out on Mono Lake and it fits the description of the building you are describing california-trailwalker. It's a bit north of Lee Vining. We never miss having at least 1 meal there when we are camping in Tuolumne.

The unclimbed peak definitely makes me curious. I think if I ever did figure out what it was AND climbed it, I wouldn't tell anyone! The mystery makes it better each time you are out there to think you might find it and climb it.

For Bob R. from Rick Secor, I have discovered a truly remarkable mountain in the Sierra the location of which the margins of this message board are too small to contain.
How far we've come from Tioga Rd conditions....

Scott, I noticed the extent of the digression some posts ago, and feel badly that I started it. My apologies to Rockman117; I should have created a new topic. In my defense, my initial post began with a comment about Mt. Dana. But then I took things elsewhere.
However, something good has come of it - I now know what I will be doing the last weekend in July.

Bob R, It's all good, I got my original question regarding Tioga rd answered very quickly and efficiently for sure. The direction this post has gone is great, as I am looking to these boards to educate myself on the Sierra's, so I know as much as possible when I move there in a year or so. P.S> I think the fish taco's are very good, spent a summer in the area a few years back and found the food at that station quite adequet, of course I sleep and eat out of my truck most of the time, so I'm not sure my reccomendations carry much weight.

Bob, The thread's path didn't really bother me. Mostly just having fun with Fermat.

Julie - Yes, the Mono Inn! That's the one! I'm sure of it, having heard the name. And now that you mention it, I'm sure it was just a bit north of Lee Vining when we went there. Thanks for the refresher!
Rockman - Moving to the Sierra? I'm jealous!

California trailwalker, Yeah I cant wait to be in the Sierra for sure, I have only done a few peaks there and only one 14er. Once I bag a few more in Colorado next season Ill be climbing in the Sierras, not sure yet where Ill hang my helmet but hopefully will be close to the big peaks. Speaking of the Sierra I have failed twice to get a Whitney permitt, so I will just sit tight and bag it as a day hike when I move there.
