Hi all,

I have recently received notification that I will be able to do a day hike in August and wanted to start planning. I can't begin to describe how excited I am - it has been 8 years since I was last on Mt. Whitney and I can't wait to return.

Aside from the food and drink we will need while doing our day hike we were wondering how much we will need to bring during the two nights we plan on camping at Whitney portal and so my question is this: Does the kitchen offer breakfast, lunch and dinner or only lunch and dinner? Any info on what the kitchen is usually serving would be great too.

All meals, I believe. Doug's pancakes are enormous and well known to those who have eaten at the store (not to mention his famous cheeseburgers).

end,

The store serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The following prices are from my August 20th, 2003 post. Prices might be a little bit different now, but I'm sure by not much.

"F.Y.I.

Large Pancake $2.78 (LARGE!!!)

Large Pancake / Eggs / 2 Sausage patties $5.75

3 eggs / mucho hashbrowns / 2 sausage patties / 4 triangles of toast $6.95"

The store also offers a pay shower around the back of the store for $3.00. (BYOTowel)

Hope this helps.

Haha, gotta agree, its the usually little burger shack kind of food, but the pancake breakfast is a must have. I have to attach my link after reading these descriptions.

I weigh 225lbs and in my life I have polished off many a 26oz porterhouse steak with all the trimmings, but have never been able to finish one of the stores pancakes. Also, the worst thing that can happen on a trip is not getting back to the portal in time to get a hamburger!!!!!!!

I first tried their Portal Store grub September 16, 2000. My climbing partner, Rich ate something with a lot of peppers (chili?) and the HAFE pushed him all the way to the summit the next day. The food also tastes great after a death march up and down in a single day. They served all three meals but they do NOT deliver to Out Post Camp, Trail Camp, Trail Crest or the summit despite my years of whinning, sniveling and complaining!

Here's a close-up photo of one of Doug's monster pancake creations!!

Thanks to Louis Perrochon for his permission to use this photo here.

PS - Louis found this thread interesting (I e-mailed its URL to him). He then replied that he finished the entire pancake himself -- after just completing the entire High Sierra Trail!

I got a permit for my group in August and am trying to plan meals while at the Portal. Does anyone know if Doug serves his famous pancakes all day or only during the breakfast hours? I'm looking for some carbs the night before the hike.

Eat one of those just before bedtime, and you won't have to anchor your tent down! :-)
