Route: Cottonwood Lakes TH, New Army Pass, shortcut to Miter Basin, Crabtree Pass, Crabtree Lakes to Crabtree Meadow, return on PCT to Cottonwood Pass and then back to Cottonwood Lakes TH.

Campsites: Lake 12129 (above Sky Blue Lake) in the Miter Basin and in Crabtree Meadow at the Whitney Creek crossing of the PCT.

Conditions Update for those traveling in this area in the near future:

Trail over New army Pass is free of snow.

Hordes of mosquitos are camping at Sky Blue Lake.

On the descent over Crabtree Pass, snow is encountered at the very bottom next to the shoreline (of the highest Crabtree Lake). The usual campsites in this location are buried in snow.

On the other side of this lake, two areas of snow must be crossed, both with a steep runout into the lake. A skid into to the lake here might be fatal. In advance, have a plan for traction and time of crossing.

On the PCT there is no water source for the 10 miles between the Rock Creek crossing and Chicken Spring Lake. This stretch was covered all day by cloudy weather and a cooling breeze, but typically it is quite hot. (It rained the night before at the Crabtree meadow campsite.)

In the Miter Basin and along the Crabtree Lakes only a solo hiker and a party of 3 were seen. Be particularly prepared for self rescue in these gorgeous areas.

Many hikers were encountered on the PCT, all heading north. A large percentage of them were beginning the JMT. They were in in high spirits and looking for the adventure ahead.

Thanks Jim For a fresh report on New Army Pass conditions, you reference to the snow field above Upper Crabtree Lake reminds me of the only time I have self arrested just before Crabtree Pass the last tarn... we were traveling on the right side of the little pond , the slope was mild but had turned to ice since it was summer and many melt/freeze cycles , most likely why I had the ax in hand. We were using the sun cups and traveling at a normal rate , next was the now what ! I got the ax in and stopped in a few feet . I never expected a fall on a low angle slope and how quick I gained speed down towards the water.

Hello Jim,
Going up to Chicken Spring next Tues then to Miter Basin. Did you get water at CSL?
how were the Mosiquitos there? what do you use as protection against them?
Thanks for you input. Enjoy your informative and interesting posts.

Hi Rick,

I did not stop at CSL to get water. The PCT passes a couple hundred yards SE of the outlet of the lake and crosses a small seasonal stream flowing from the outlet. Unfortunately, that stream was nearly dry, so I took no water from it. Just after crossing the seasonal stream, there is an obvious use trail up to the outlet of CSL. I passed on the opportunity to get water at the lake and kept going.

No mosquitos were noticed on the trail in CSL area, but maybe there were some up at the lake.

Typically, the only exposed area of my skin is my face. If mosquitos are bothering me on the face, I apply Repel insect repellent (98% DEET).

Hope you have a great trip to the Miter Basin. Afterwards, it would be great to hear about your experiences/insights/updated conditions..
