Excellent article in latest issue (July/August) of Backpacker magazine about the late Randy Morgenson and the peak unofficially named after him. Officially labeled peak 4245, just west of Russell. Also mentions Richard P. and his efforts to put a register on the summit.

When I climbed Morgenson, there was already a register on it. There were only a few signatures, but one of them was Norman Clyde.

When I climbed it I seem to remember two things, Richard having a nap on a slab in the Wallace creek basin while we climbed the peak, and smoke at the summit obscuring what looked like incredible views of the neighboring peaks. I don't remember a register but I'd have to check the photos. The summit is a fun, scrambly kinda thing. I'll have to go back someday, climb it again in clear skies then have a nap on that slab. smile

Sooner or later we'll all be napping on a slab...

First off, answers for the other thread...
A pile of rubble near the El Paso Mountains Wilderness was shaking apart on the fourth... no name that I know of, but I believe there is a register on the summit (crazy RC'ers with nothing better to do...)

Hi Chris, make sure we know when you're coming out...
I want in on the climb with your son...
I need lots of lead time... I was only up at 7700+' the other day and thought I was going to die...
(Sorell Peak if your curious... I picked up a D9 leftover and was doing some pre-season scouting and decided I'd throw in a peak.)

This is 10 years since KAshcraft passed on Thor... many others are gone now too... we should do something special this Autumn... maybe Axeman can lead another group on Thor, or Candlelight. or...

(I was thinking of the Dude who did all the PCT stuff the other day when I took a break at Bird Spring Pass... Trail Angels have put 100+ gallons of water at the Pass...)

Rockwell and Clyde, maybe, but not RP... (see, I even know how to insult myself...)

I have heard rumors that there was a Clyde signature on Morgenson back in the day... it disappeared and got replaced by a forgery... (not really, just someone who put Clyde's name in the replacement register...)

Last edited by Richard P.; 07/11/19 10:15 PM. Reason: Rob Pilewski placed the 1st Morgenson register... it got stolen by the Register Thieves... I replaced it when I was told that Rob's had gone missing... that was during my Ranger Death March Re-enactment...

Name dropping...
Eric was supposed to tell me this was being published.
He and I had a lot of email conversations after someone at Google decided to put Morgenson on the map. (I believe it's gone now.)

Who is this Axeman of which you speak...?

Yes, the topic has come up, especially when putting together the new edition of the book and looking at the photos. We wanted to tie it together with Rosie's anniversary Whitney summit (I won't put the number of years, because anyone who met Rosie in person or saw photos of her would say I was making stuff up), but she just moved to the east coast. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that she can make it back for it, so we'll see if it's a double-header weekend.

Regardless, yes, I shall endeavor to organize an event. That was one of the best days on any mountain anywhere at any time. There was some true spirit there and that needs to be rekindled---for everyone who was there, for everyone who has left us, and those we'll be passing the torch to...

Stay tuned.

Richard notes: "This is 10 years since KAshcraft passed on Thor...we should do something special this autumn."

In Bob R's photo album (in the WPSMB photo album links) from the autumn of 2009 there are some nice photos of Kent's family (wife Ilene and children Andrew,Tiffany,Jonathon, and Nathaniel) along with Earlene and Doug Sr. We wish them all the very best.

Clyde did the first ascent of Peak 4245 in 1926. Bob R was with the group that did the first ascent from the south in 2004. Bob was unable to top out with the others. As I recall, some place after the group passed Sakai Col heading west, Bob's heart stopped firing on all four cylinders and he decided to stay behind. Best wishes to Bob, too.

Not just a rumor. I found a register on Morgenson on 8-11-92. The first entry (from 1935?) had several names I didn’t recognize. It said they found a cairn. The second entry (from 1936?) said a Sierra Club party had traversed from Russell. One of the signatures was Norman Clyde.

The third entry was from several decades later. One guy had been tossing pebbles off the summit. They heard a metallic sound when he hit what turned out to be a metal Band-Aid can with the register in it. My entry was the fifth or sixth one.
