Does anyone have information about the airport in Inyokern? I have used it for many years and now I am getting no results when I try to search for flights there. Never mind: "Inyokern Airport is set to lose its only commercial commuter airline service in November, according to airport officials. Scott Seymour, General Manager of IYK, confirmed Tuesday that United Express, a partner with the regional company SkyWest Airlines, would suspend flights to and from the airport after Nov. 4 (2013)." @#$!%&! Afraid it is true. "Inyokern International" is no longer an option for commercial service

Food for thought - my initial flight searches came up empty there, till I learned I just can't get there on a Saturday. Also, I can't ever arrive before 5:06 pm, so I can't hike the same day I arrive, which I prefer...

There was a headline in the local paper that implies that a Hawaii based airline may take on service tie IYK...

I'm president of the Indian Wells Valley Airport District Board of Directors. We are in discussions with Hawaii-based Mokulele Airlines to provide airline service between Inyokern and LAX. Earliest start date will be Oct 2016. Still have a lot of details to work through.

If there is enough traffic to make money, somebody will fly the route.
If there is not enough traffic, nobody will fly it.
If United couldn't make money, will anybody else?

In addition to being an avid Sierra backpacker, I'm also president of the Indian Wells Valley Airport District board of directors. We've been trying to entice an airline back into Inyokern for years, but the sorry financial state of commuter airlines (Great Lakes) and operational issues with routing into LAX (Mokulele), plus legitimate questions regarding Navy participation and our business case have proven frustrating. We're still trying with another to be named later airline, but it seems to reaffirm the old adage: The way to end up with a small fortune in the airline business is to start with a really big fortune.

Good luck, but I guess it's time for me to give up on my dream of flying to IYK this summer. Maybe next year...

May be another viable alternative in the future at the Bishop airport. A more extensive piece on the Sierra Wave website: Inyo County Public Works Director Clint Quilter summarized the highlights of the study at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting. The study included a letter of interest from Allegiant Air proposing two 156-seat A319 flights a week from Oakland, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The letter also referred to the suggestion from community representatives that subsidies would be a possibility.
But, before the County launches into a three-phased project to ready the airport for passenger traffic, Quilter is getting a second opinion from additional consultants to verify the optimistic Leigh/Fisher draft. The price tag on the build out comes to $23 million, $20 million of which will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Interesting... It looks like they're going to fly at 8-seater Pilatus PC-12 and the service is highly subsidized. I wonder if the math works without that subsidy.
