Well not down per say, but out of date...I just got off the phone with John at the Wilderness Permit office to check on some availability, and he let me know that their website <
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/whitneyavail.shtml> has crashed and they can't get in to update permit cancellations - it was last updated June 15th. He's not sure when it might be fixed so they can update it.
You can still call them to find out what might be opening up:
~Wilderness Reservation Office is open every day from 8am to 4:30pm, open for weekends and holidays during the summer.
Reservations can be made by phone, fax or mail.
