Look for another way to hike to Mt Tyndall from End of Onion Valley Road 9,200ft to Kearsarge Pass 11,760ft, West to JMT, South on JMT, to Mt Tyndall. Anyone has any comment as to - Is it easier or harder than Shepherd Pass trail?

Thanks

Easier? Longer definitely, plus you'll be going over Forrester Pass before dropping into Tyndall Creek and then walking the long rise back up to the base of Tyndall. The old JMT followed a route through Center Basin and Junction Pass, dropping into the Pothole at the base of Shepherds.

But I would think the route is gorgeous. It certainly was by the light of a full moon!

I think Shepherd's reputation as difficult is way overblown. It's a long trek (usually 2 days camping at Anvil Camp but I have taken 3 to acclimate - camp firast night at Mahogeny Flat - or even at the small campsite at the first water crossing - then meander up to the campsites north of the creek crossing above the Pothole (look for them at the base of the small cliffs) then over the pass in early morning. Once on top of the pass, Tyndall is right there.

Booger, totally couldn't agree more. I really enjoy Shepherds Pass, and I think it's a gorgeous route (apparently along with quite the horde of other people: I've never seen more cars in the lot yesterday at the trailhead!).

TAH: what you suggested in a really nice route. Longer, and a bit tougher with the slog over Forrester, but the views are top-rate! (hint, hint...)

That's the route that we're doing in a few days. We'll go in at Onion Valley and exit at Symmes Creek and get to see both routes. Of course we have a problem of getting back to our car.

Anyone want to do this route in reverse and trade keys?
