Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board 7/4 weekend, what to do?!?

I'll be up at Tuttle Creek for 4th of July. I figure on Saturday I will do a hike. I'm swaying between Olancha Peak, Independence Peak, Meysan Lake and the Cottonwood Lakes. I've never caught a Golden Trout so if the Cottonwood Lakes are thawed out I may go that way.

Any info/suggestions??

How about Cirque Peak? Then you can give us a report on the passes...

The lakes in the Cottonwood basin were nearly/mostly ice-free as of last Saturday. I was amazed - 10 days earlier the only one with open water was Hidden Lake - maybe because they're so shallow? I took some pics of New Army which I hope to put up soon. Old Army was blocked from my vantage point (Flattop), but Cirque and NA were clearly visible.

Sweet!! If I go with Cottonwood I can drag the whole family along. That makes it even better! I'm leaning that way for now. I'll watch the board for any updates.
