Doing Whitney in mid July and at this point we are shut out of Whitney Portal. Is it easy to get a spot in either Cottonwood Lakes or Horseshoe Meadow campgrounds. I have heard that it's first come, first served. We would get there on a Saturday, need for two nights.

It's one night only. However, I've never had anyone bother me when I've stayed multiple nights.

The campsites at Cottonwood Pass Trailhead are more plentiful and those at Cottonwood Lakes are nicer.

Getting there on a Friday might be iffy, but you should find a spot on a Saturday without much difficulty. The earlier you get there the better thou.

I'm heading up that way next week (June 3). Does anybody know if the road is open yet? And about how long does it take to drive from the Cottonwood campground area to Whitney Portal?
