Just curious if anyone has been up San G via Vivian Creek recently? I'm heading up there this weekend and was curious how far I could hike up safely w/o winter gear. Thanks!

Go to the San Gorgonio Wilderness Assoc. site for the latest and greatest info for that area.

A friend of mine just went up last Saturday. Snow starts above Halfway Camp, which is 8100' orso.

wbtravis5152, the website (http://sgwa.org/trails.htm) was last updated Apr 17, but I just noticed there's a link to a Bulletin Board with some recent discussion.
luciano137, thank you for the information.

Hey Bigsky,

Was wondering if you have a permit. I put in for an overnite on Monday for two at High Creek and have gotten no reply. Looks like we will be giving San J a try. Have fun, be safe.

Dances,
The Mill Creek Ranger Station is usually open on Monday, they should be able to issue you a permit on the spot.
You also might try calling them, perhaps your request had some problem. There's almost no chance they are full on a weekday this time of year. If they have your request and any problems are resolved, I believe they will leave your permit outside the office for you to pick up if you are shooting for an early start.

I edited my original post; snow actually starts around 8.1k. When I said Half Way camp, I was thinking about the elevation of High Creek camp. Sorry about that.

Hey K,

I was invited to join a group heading up tomorrow, so I'm not privy to the permit situation. Hope you secure your permits and bring back spectacular photos & stories.

Thanks all for your contributions.

So I'm standing in my office when my fax machine started to buzz and I don't even really think about it. Thinking we would not have a permit for tonight through Sunday we made arrangements to do the tram to San Jacinto tomorrow morning. I walk out of the copy room. Come back in and wa la! A permit appears. We will not be going tonight as other plans had been made but will see you all tomorrow up the Vivian Creek trail to the top. Look for blister boy with the bright yellowish orange jacket. That thing cannot be missed.

Have Fun, Be Safe

I did San J. last Sunday. There is snow all the way from the creek crossing (after the tram station) to the summit. Snow was solid enough we didn't have to use snow shoes, just microspikes. It was beautiful up there, enjoy!
