There is an article in the LA Times regarding Mt. Whitney - May 9 edition.

Nice article Kevin. Of course the first thing I noticed is the "typo" about the East Face of Whitney being lit up by the sunset. They should have said sunrise. laugh -Walter

Oldbob, I'm guessing Horseshoe Meadows. Depending on what pass you go over that can be around 40 or so miles. They said they got a permit on the third day of trying 6 months in advance. -Walter

There was a nice mention of the store.

"We trudged the final seven miles and headed for the world's best hand-cut French fries, available at the Whitney Portal Store".

You will need two permits. The first for the entry point, either Horseshoe Meadows or Cottonwood Lakes(recommended). The second is the tough one if your planning on high season(July/August). You'll need a Trail Crest exit permit which is limited to 25 persons/day. The Trail Crest permit is not part of the Mt. Whitney lottery and can be requested up to six months in advance of your planned date of exit over Trail Crest. Use the normal Wilderness Reservation Form on the Inyo NF website.

Here are my photos of a 5 day Cottonwood Lakes/Whitney Portal trip from the last week of August 2009. Good Luck!
