Can you take a 36 foot motor home up to horseshoe meadows camp ground?
and can you do the same at the portal.

I am interested to see what comes of this question also. My hiking parter and I are hiking to the Mount Whitney summit and starting at Horseshoe Meadows. We each have a 4x4 one ton trucks with slide-in camper in the rear. We want to park one at HSM and the other at Whitney Portal. The problem I see is that it might look like we are camping at the trailheads. Any opinions.

Arlan, You won't have any problems at either site.
RHL, I defer to others who might have a better idea of getting your rig up the roads. My estimate is that you can make it but it will be plenty of slow and low with some of the sharp turns and the downhill return will really work your brakes.

I believe I saw a sign saying something like 'trailers not recommended' along the Portal road.

With that the camp host had a pretty big rig up at Whitney Portal but he may have had assistance as host. One guy pulling a jayco type camper told me he had to spray the radiator to keep from overheating.

I know we can make it up the road, I just dont know if they are allowed overnite at horseshoe meadows, and if they are allowed at the overflow lot below the back pack sites at the portal.

I email the portal store with this question an this is the reply I received

"Hi Arlan!
There is no RV Parking past the Lone Pine Campground. I don't know how new this is since your last visit. There are a few options. You can drive up to Horseshoe Meadows and when you get to trailhead call for shuttle service. (If it's after 5 pm or weekend my husband has picked up and drove parties to Horseshoe Meadows.) You can also park your vehicles here at our store in Lone Pine (we have a store in the town of Lone Pine, which I work out of), or also I know of people that have plenty of lots for storage if you opt for removing your camper.
Let me know and the dates you will be arriving.

Janet
Whitney Portal Store Too"

I called Janet after I received the email and she told me she thought the reason was mostly Bear Related. Food in RV's and breakins

I friend of mine left his 25 Class C motorhome at the Whitney Portal overflow when he did a day hike this July, he said parking there wasn't recommended by the authorities but they let him do it anyway.

Also at Horseshoe Meadows there is a horse camp where people with RV's pulling horse trailers camp, I don't know if it is OK to camp there with out a horse?
