Since *that* infamous day is upon us I just wanted to relate a post 9/11 story that was written by a man who had just summitted Whitney for the first time (in a day)with his wife and friends.

He said they got up before dawn, summitted at the regular afternoon time and were ecstatic. They couldn't stop talking about the experience. To celebrate they went to the Spaghetti Factory in Lone Pine. Since the party was still excited over summitting and talking, they didn't notice the big-screen TV in the restaurant. He was irate because the help was cranky and long-faced and he got real perturbed when they werne't paying attention and served the salad after the main meal. He asked why the service wasn't better and the waitress pointed to the TV. It was then they realized what had happened.

He said they went out, got in the car, turned on the radio and drove home in silence.

God Bless America

They were on top of the country when it was attacked. I guess 9/11 taught me to live every second of every day to the fullest because it isn't guaranteed.

Thanks AJ , I remember reading their hike report, it was a great write up. I think Doug or his co author was going to enclude that write in their new book. I summited Sept. 15, 2002 , there were flags on the Smith. Hut. The day before I summited I went in for a hair cut at the Barber shop in Lone Pine, the barber said that the day before a few Fire Men from back East came in for a bath after they summited. They took a picture by the Smith. Hut with "The American Flag"(full Size), the picture was taken Sept. 11, 2002. This year when I go up to Whitney Portal , I am going to get a Hair cut again and check if the Barber got a copy from the Fire Men. VicTor 4/27
