Just to give you an idea how tough version 1 is:
I headed up into the Owens Peak Wilderness with my SPOT this afternoon, did a climb up to the PCT and Morris Peak and then headed home. When I got there, SPOT was no longer tied onto the cargo rack of my motorcycle. I headed inside, turned on the computer and checked my SPOT Track.
The last track point showed up as too old, so I figured that it was lost. I checked again a while later and a new track point showed up. I copied the coordinates to my GPS, headed out to the garage and drove back out.
I didn't even need to get out of the car! My GPS was reading 27' to go when it showed up in the headlights.
It hit the ground at 45-50 mph and only had a covering of dust on it. No dings to speak of and it put out two more track points on the drive back home, so it's still working fine.
Amazing! And, it just goes to show that I am lucky.
