George-There are good places to camp at both Hangover or Stratton Bald. The bald is about 5 acres in size with a slight slope from NW to SE. There is a spring downslope from the bench mark at the woods/meadow margin. Just follow the use trails. For Hangover, you'll have to camp in the trees at Saddle Tree Gap-about 1/10 mile from the rock outcrop. A good spring is west downhill from the gap. Both are beautiful spots. Hangover has a true 360 panorama with the Smokies rising to the NE. To get the view though, you have to leave your tent and hike the .1 mile to the outcrop. Stratton Bald is ringed with trees, but you can still see from horizon to horizon all from your tent. The nearest trailhead is Wolf Laurel on F.S. 81-F which is off F.S. 81. From Wolf Laurel it's only 1.5 miles to Stratton Bald and 2.5 to Hangover. F.S. 81 and F.S. 81-F combined is 11 miles of gravel road most times in good condition, but call the Cheoah Ranger District office for conditions- 828-479-6431. If you don't already have it, get a copy of Tim Holman's guide book of the area at REI. That guy writes the best guide books. You're welcome to call me if you have any questions- 404-641-2822. I've been hiking those trails for 30 years. Have fun if weather permits. John
