Anyone familiar with the Horseshoe Meadows Rd...

How far does the pavement go when you turn onto Cottonwood Equestrian Campground Road?

Horseshoe Meadows Rd tops out at 9,950 ft or so. Am looking to ride up on my road bike and the goal is to get over 10,000 ft on pavement. Thanks!!

Not sure about the altitude - but the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead (about 1/4 mile to the end of the road I) is higher than the Cottonwood Pass trailhead (1/4 mile to the end of the road II).

if you come out of your saddel at the top of the loop around cottom wood campground you will be at 9,987

weather is moving in quick, which means the temp will be dropping and rising and that means lots of expansion on the rocks above, keep a eye for falling rocks

their is a reason why the road is always messed up near the top

We just rode Horseshoe Meadows on our road bikes last Saturday.
Started at the intersection of Horseshoe and Whitney Portal Road.
At the top of Horseshoe you are just shy of 10K.
We did both Whitney Portal and Horseshoe and came up with 9600 feet of climbing for the day. Epic.
Check out this ride report.

If you do Rock Creek up to Mosquito Flats, it will get get you above 10k.
Have fun..

haha! Nice pictures. Mosquito Flat is in my backyard and a regular part of my routine. Yah... I rode Horseshoe 1st week in November a couple years ago on a trip south and was wanting to get it again before winter sets in.

Mosquito and the Schulman Grove are supposedly the only paved roads over 10k in the state but if my hunch is correct, the fork in the road that leads to Cottonwood Pass Trailhead gets you to 10,040 and possibly 10,100 on pavement.

Epic by any standards. smile

The road to the equestrian campground and the nearby backpackers campground are paved and everything I have read says they are both over 10,000. Google maps puts them at 10,063

Isn't Google Earth great! Supposedly, there are only two paved roads in the state that top out at over 10,000 ft. Both are in Inyo County. This makes three and worth noting, imho. smile
