I was thinking about trying to hunt for deer this fall or next. I'm sick and tired of all the hormone filled junk available in the stores and want to get some good wild meat.

Are there any hunters in the crowd who have some feedback on what they use?

Savage .270 Winchester with scope. 130 grain.

It got enough "umph" to bring down a feral pig. Feral pigs are good eating, too! Just have to find the right butcher.

Have to use the "unleaded" ammo in Madera County. Be careful using the "leaded" ammo in the Sierra Nevada.

Thanks man!! I was afraid I'd get a bunch of people responding with how terrible it is for me to go hunting.

It looks like the deer are coming out of the high country now. It may have to wait until next year but I'm looking forward to going.

I've seen a good butcher around Bishop. Do you or anyone else have any other recommendations?

Map

Enclosed is a map affecting the areas west of the Sierra if using centerfire or pistol ammo.

The areas outlined in the color yellow are "lead-free" zones.

Note the "wedge" from Bakersfield north. Areas east of the I-5 and west of 99 are "lead" zones.

For more information, read here.

I too favor the .270.
BTW, it is a rifle, not a gun. wink

Wild, hunted game. A truly organic food.

Thanks for the replies everyone. This is great. I had no idea there were regulations on things like leaded vs unleaded ammo. There's obviously a bunch to learn.

I'm going to research this and look at doing it next fall. I can take a gun safety class and get properly prepared.

One thing I learned in some of my research I've already done is hunters and hunting organizations are some of the biggest advocates for protecting the environment. That's awesome!

You're welcome.

Enrolling in a hunter safety education course is your first step. It is a 10-hour course. You must also present the last four digits of your SSN in order to receive your Hunter Safety Card.

Being a member of three hunting organizations, I can get discounts on weapons and ammunition. It pays to pay your dues.

Good luck on becoming a responsible and ethical hunter.

To know more, check out California Department of Fish and Game

Safety first, last and always.

Have fun.

Apologies in advance for this...

Two hunters are out in the wild hunting, when out of nowhere, one of the hunters falls to the ground. The other hunter checks if he's breathing, but there's no sign of life, so he calls 911: "Please! Help me! I think my friend is dead!"

The operator says: "OK, OK, calm down, first, we need to make sure if he's really dead". After a short moment of silence, a gunshot is heard, then the frantic hunter says: "OK, now what?!"

It's a rifle, not a gun. Here's a variation of an old military slogan to help you remember. Hold yer rifle in yer right hand, and yer tally-wacker in yer left hand and chant: "This is my rifle, this is my gun. One is for shooting, the other is for fun."

All rifles are guns. The term "gun" includes both rifles and handguns. If it's a rifle, it most certainly IS a gun.

This will come as a relief to dictionary editors and to people who sell rifles at gun shows. cool
